The dos and don'ts of dating a 'proper' Thai lady.
If you are looking to meet a Thai lady just for a holiday trip romance in Thailand you are what we term a 'sex-tourist'. The men that indulge is such behaviour are of no interest to our ladies, so if this is your intention, don't waste your, our and our ladies' time. You will be able to find what you want in a bar when you are here. What is life like for Thai ladies? top Contrary to the belief of many, (they having a view formed from a holiday where they only interacted with the 'tourist focused' Thais) Thailand is a very conservative society. The vast majority of the population live with respect towards age and wealth, with the good name of their family being uppermost. When it comes to selecting a partner for marriage, it is still a family matter, with approval for contact being sought from parents and meetings being strictly chaperoened. A dowry (in Thai 'sinsod') is expected as recompence for taking a daughter from a household. These standards and values are slowly being eroded due to western influence amongst the young and by those of an unscrupulous character. It is not done to show emotion in public, (even holding hands is seem as negative to many) with any form of disrespect or criticism being unacceptable. Even talk of intimacy is to be avoided and left for behind closed doors. What do Thai ladies find attractive in a man? top Given the conservatism of Thai society, Thai ladies find outward shows of 'sexiness' as disrespectful. A relatively wealthy, well-mannered and respectful man of clean, smart and conservative appearance, ideally from a family of higher status are the basic requirements to maintain the good name of the family. Why do so many Thai ladies want a 'western' husband? top In traditional Thai society the status of men is higher than that of women. It is quite common for a Thai man to be unfaithful and even set up home with a 'second wife', many rejecting their original commitments. Quite obviously, if you have experienced this, you want something different. This leads to the question; Why do Thai women become 'second wives'? top It is expected that every woman will marry and have children. The most important criteria when choosing a partner is status. Given the lack of any pressure on men to support their wives and children, it can make it necessary to accept the advances of a successful, even if married, man with the promise of security, despite the lack any legal commitment. What do Thai ladies expect from a 'western' husband? top There is a fixed idea that all westerners are rich, with no concept of a limit to their wealth. Status is regarded as the most important aspect in Thai society, with a need to 'show'. When marrying a westerner, a Thai lady is elevated to the highest level of social standing and is expected to show the fact. Given these views and social pressures, it is not unreasonable for a new wife to expect a completely new lifestyle to suit her new-found, 'limitless' wealth. Obviously this becomes one of the first 'negotiations' that a prospective husband needs to have. Aside from financial standing, obviously personal choice is a factor, however the general Thai attitude is to keep life simple, so if they like the look of you (the fact that you are 'rich' has a big influence on this), a commitment is made. Do you provide contact prior to a visit to Thailand? top We are providing a service within our local community, rather than to those with internet awareness and access. Whilst some of our ladies have a home PC, few are familar with e-mail and instant messaging. (less than 15% of the population have a fixed telephone line and/or are internet users) To be fair to all of our ladies, we are providing internet access. This means that most of the ladies visit us to check their e-mail accounts and receive help with IT and translation. Once they feel comfortable with you, they will provide their mobile phone number. What constitutes a marriage in Thailand? top There are different levels of marriage. To be officially recognised a marriage must be registered at the local government office. This is just a form filling exercise, as is divorce, and is recognised throughout the world. There is a local custom ceromony administered by the families and is seen as the wedding. In the eyes of a traditional Thai lady, intimate contact implies marriage. There is no 'boyfriend/girlfriend' status, despite many westerners' beliefs, their relationships usually having been formed from an initial 'sex for sale' contact. If you ask the 'girlfriend', she will say she is a wife. It's not that long ago that if a Thai man so much as touched a lady, he married her! Why are you offering this service? top We are providing this service in order to assist the local community, due to popular demand. As we have the facilities and first-hand knowledge, we are able to offer you the opportunity to have a taste of Thai life, and to meet some genuine Thai people, rather than those working in the tourist industry, who most tourists are limited to. We consider that our service offers a more open and honest approach to helping people meet their life expectations, through providing the support necessary to overcome the considerable cutural and language barriers. How easy is it to live in Thailand? top There are a growing number of Western/Thai families living in Thailand. This is partly due to the easy pace of life for those that have local financial security. Whilst the rules on extended stays have recently been tightened, it is still a relatively easy, low cost process, the main element being your ability to provide financial support for yourself from a verifiable source, such as a pension, or other regular international fund transfers. As a habitat, Thailand has most of the 'western' facilities that you take for granted, but at a vastly reduced cost. Coupled with a tropical climate, Thailand is a free and easy environment and we recommend that you seriously consider relocating here, should your circumstances allow. Why should I use your service rather than one of the many others that are available? top Put simply, we are not operating this service as a money-making business. Our service is different because it is focused on helping our local community, and as such is a source of genuine people that have the potential to provide you with your future happiness, as opposed to many other operations that allow 'any one' to add a profile to their web-site. Of the many other introductions agencies and services, you will not find one that provides the same level of facilities and support, regardless of how much they charge. Whilst they may have hundreds of applicants to choose from, ours are from local families, and known to us. Our commitment to you starts when you complete an application and potentially never stops, even after a successful introduction. We will support you to our best ability, answering your questions, acting as 'cultural go-between' and translator, whenever you require. We see you as a potential long-term friend and neighbour. What obstacles are there for a potential partner living in my home country? top In contrast to the ease of your visit and potentential long-term stay in Thailand, the entry of Thai nationals into western countries is strict and relatively expensive, the main demands being that you prove that you have a valid relationship and that you are able to financially support your visitor 'without recourse to government funds'. Culturally, Thailand is very different, and it can be quite difficult for Thais to adjust to climate, culture and social structure. The very first problem is usually that of isolation, Thais being naturally gregarious and socially active. It is not impossible, but it is usually much easier for a westerner to adjust to Thai life. Each country has different rules and degrees of difficulty, and no introductions service can guarantee a successful application for permanent residence in your home country. The most important requirement is that you can produce evidence to show that you have a true relationship over a minimum period that no-one will define, but experience suggests six months. There are specialist organisations that provide visa application services for Thai nationals, should you wish not to attempt this privately. Do you have any examples of introductions? top Even though our service is a relatively small operation, we have made several successful introductions. We also hear from many people about experiences, the following being typical: A lady, having signed up with an introductions agency, corresponded with a man for the best part of a year via e-mail. He decided to visit Thailand and her. Upon his arrival he was taken to a large party gathering consisting of most of the ladies extended family and friends. To her, he had come to 'be together' with her, so she wanted to 'show' the fact. What happened was that upon actually meeting, he did not like her, preferring one of her cousins that he met at the party, and eventually married. The lady 'lost face' and was understandably upset, given her incorrect expectations. How much do you charge your Thai ladies? top We do not solicit any payment upon application, for using any of our services, or upon a successful introduction. We are happy to be able to help the local community, having been requested to do so by many over the last few years. Can your ladies speak English? top English is taught in Thai schools, these days from the age of 5. If you have investigated, you will know that Thai is a tonal-based language, and therefore very different. The standard of English in Thailand is quite poor, even amongst university graduates and school teachers. Our ladies can all understand and speak a few words, but in general it is limited. If you think this is an obstacle for you, then you are limiting yourself to either a very small group of high-class Thai society, or those that work in a tourist-focused industry. Whilst there are many genuine people amongst tourist-workers, you should regard this group with suspicion, as you are their means of livelihood, in one way or another. |
